Overview

Kathmandu which is well-known as the city of temple and living Goddess is the capital of Nepal. Kathmandu is such a perfect place for travelers to experience the blend of modern influence with the ancient cultural heritages still intact in its original form. We visit the ancient Durbar squares in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. The travelers get the opportunity to witness, two of the biggest Buddhist Stupas in the world: Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and the Boudhanath Stupa. Kathmandu Durbar Square:The Durbar Square of Kathmandu is in the old city and has lots of heritage buildings representing four kingdoms (Kantipur, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kirtipur); the earliest being the Licchavi dynasty. The complex has 50 temples and is distributed in two quadrangles of the Durbar Square. The outer quadrangle has the Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar and Shiva-Parvati Temple; the inner quadrangle has the Hanuman Dhoka Palace.

Pashupatinath Temple: Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu. It is served as the seat of national deity, Lord Pashupatinath, until Nepal was secularized. However, a significant part of the temple was destroyed by Mughal invaders in the 14th century and little or not a thing remains of the original 5th-century temple exterior. As it stands today the temple was built in the 19th century, although the image of the bull and the black four-headed image of Pashupati are at least 300 years old. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shivaratri or the night of Lord Shiva, is the most important festival that takes place here, attracting thousands of devotees and sadhus feom all over the world.

Boudhanath stupa: It is a very popular tourist site and is known as Khasti by Newars and as Bauddha or Bodhnath by speakers of Nepali. About 11 km (7 mi) from the centre and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu, the stupa's massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal. Boudhanath became a UNESCO world heritage sites in 1979. The base of the stupa has 108 small depictions of the Dhyani Buddha Amitabh. It is surrounded with a brick wall around 147 inches, each with four or five prayer wheels engraved with the mantra, om mani padme hum. The northern entrance where visitors must pass, is a shrine dedicated to Ajima, the goddess of smallpox.

 Attraction Of Boudhanath

  • The Great Stupa: A massive white dome representing water, topped by a gilded square tower (harmika) with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha. The 13-step golden spire above it symbolizes the stages to enlightenment.
  • The Kora Path: A circular brick-paved walkway around the base where hundreds of pilgrims perform kora (ritual circumambulation) in a clockwise direction.
  • Prayer Wheels and Flags: The base is lined with 147 niches containing 108 images of the Amitabha Buddha and a continuous ring of copper prayer wheels that visitors spin for merit. Thousands of colorful prayer flags stretch from the spire to the ground, carrying mantras on the wind.

Swayambunath Temple: It is a Buddhist stupa at top of a hillock in the northwest part of the city. This structure is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal. Although the site is considered Buddhist, it is worshiped by both Buddhists and Hindus. The stupa consists of a dome at the base; above the dome, there is a cubic structure with the eyes of Buddha looking in all four directions.There are pentagonal toran above each of the four sides, with statues engraved on them. Behind and above the toran there are thirteen tiers. Above all the tiers, there is a small space where lies a Gajur (The top most part of the temples).

Attraction Of Swoyambunath

  • Panoramic Views: The hilltop offers a 360-degree view of the Kathmandu Valley. On clear 2026 winter days, you can see the snow-capped Himalayan peaks of Langtang in the distance.
  • The 365 Steps: Most visitors ascend via the steep eastern staircase of 365 steps, representing each day of the year.
  • Monkey Watching: The site is home to hundreds of rhesus macaques, considered sacred guardians. They are playful but known to snatch shiny objects or food.
  • Swayambhu Buddha Park: At the base of the hill near the Ring Road, this park features three towering golden statues of Shakyamuni BuddhaGuru Padmasambhava, and Avalokitesvara.
  • Spiritual Observation: Witness monks chanting at the Dewa Dharma Monastery or join locals in Kora (clockwise circumambulation) around the stupa.
